How to add a video to your Shopify homepage

A short video can show a product in use better than any photo. Shopify themes make it easy to add one to the homepage.

1. Use the video section

  1. Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize and open the homepage.
  2. Click Add section and choose Video.
  3. Paste a YouTube or Vimeo link, or pick a video you've uploaded to Shopify, depending on what your theme version supports.
  4. Add a cover image and a heading, and drag the section to where it belongs, often just below the hero.

Keep it short and make sure it makes sense with the sound off: most visitors won't unmute.

2. A background video in the hero

  1. Upload the video in Content > Files (a short, compressed MP4 works best).
  2. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes. On your theme, click the ... menu and choose Duplicate, so you have a backup. Then on the theme you're editing, open the ... menu and choose Edit code.
  3. In the hero section, add a muted, looping, autoplaying video element behind the text, with a still image as a fallback.
  4. Consider showing the still image instead on mobile to save data.

3. Or ask Liquify in one sentence

Liquify is an AI theme editor for Shopify. Type the change in plain words and it edits your theme for you, on a draft copy, with a live preview. Nothing changes on your store until you publish.

Questions

Should I upload my video or use YouTube?

Uploading to Shopify keeps viewers on your site with no YouTube branding or suggested videos. YouTube is fine for longer content.

Will a homepage video slow down my store?

Embedded videos that only load when played have little impact. Autoplaying background videos are heavier, so keep them short and compressed.
