How to change your Shopify theme colors

Most modern Shopify themes, including Dawn, organize colors into color schemes: a set of background, text, button, and link colors you can apply to any section.

Change a scheme once and every section using it updates, which keeps the store consistent.

1. Edit your color schemes

  1. Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize, click the gear icon (Theme settings), and open Colors.
  2. Edit an existing scheme or add a new one: set the background, text, solid button, button label, and outline button colors.
  3. Open a section (like the header or a banner) and choose which scheme it uses from its Color scheme setting.
  4. Check contrast: text and buttons should stay easy to read on every background.

Start from your logo's main color as the accent, plus one dark and one light neutral.

2. Change colors the settings don't reach

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes. On your theme, click the ... menu and choose Duplicate, so you have a backup. Then on the theme you're editing, open the ... menu and choose Edit code.
  2. Look in your theme's main stylesheet for the color variables it uses (for example --color-button or --color-foreground in Dawn) to see where each scheme's colors are applied.
  3. Add targeted CSS for one-off changes, like a different sale price color, rather than overriding whole schemes.
