How to add a custom section in Shopify

Online Store 2.0 themes are built from sections you can add, remove, and reorder. When none of the built-in ones fit, you can create your own, and it will show up in the theme editor like any other.

1. Try the built-in sections first

  1. Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize and open the page you want to change.
  2. Click Add section and browse what's there. An image next to text is Image with text in Dawn; Multicolumn, Rich text, and Custom Liquid cover a lot more.
  3. Built-in sections update with your theme and need no maintenance, so use them when they're close enough.

2. Create your own section

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes. On your theme, click the ... menu and choose Duplicate, so you have a backup. Then on the theme you're editing, open the ... menu and choose Edit code.
  2. In the sections folder, click Add a new section and give it a name.
  3. Write the section's HTML and Liquid, and a {% schema %} block that defines its settings and a preset so it appears under Add section.
  4. Add it from Customize and fill in its settings.

  <h2>{{ section.settings.heading }}</h2>
  <p>{{ section.settings.text }}</p>
</div>

{% schema %}
{
  "name": "Custom feature",
  "settings": [
    { "type": "text", "id": "heading", "label": "Heading", "default": "Made to last" },
    { "type": "textarea", "id": "text", "label": "Text" }
  ],
  "presets": [{ "name": "Custom feature" }]
}
{% endschema %}

3. Or ask Liquify in one sentence

Liquify is an AI theme editor for Shopify. Type the change in plain words and it edits your theme for you, on a draft copy, with a live preview. Nothing changes on your store until you publish.

Questions

Will a custom section survive theme updates?

Updating to a new theme version doesn't carry your code changes over automatically, so keep a copy of custom sections and re-add them after updating.

Can I reuse a custom section on other pages?

Yes. Once it has a preset, it can be added to any page that supports sections, each with its own settings.
