How to add a newsletter signup to Shopify

An email signup turns visitors who aren't ready to buy into people you can reach later. Shopify themes include a signup form that saves subscribers straight to your customer list.

1. Use the email signup section

  1. Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize and open the homepage.
  2. Click Add section and choose Email signup. Set the heading and a short line on what subscribers get.
  3. Many themes, including Dawn, also have a Show email signup option in the footer section.
  4. Subscribers appear in Customers with email marketing consent, ready for Shopify Email or your email app.

If you offer a discount for signing up, make sure your welcome email actually sends the code.

2. A signup pop-up

  1. Most themes don't include a pop-up, so this is either an app or custom code.
  2. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes. On your theme, click the ... menu and choose Duplicate, so you have a backup. Then on the theme you're editing, open the ... menu and choose Edit code.
  3. Build the pop-up with the theme's customer form so signups still land in your customer list.
  4. Show it after a delay or on exit intent, not instantly, and remember when a visitor has closed it.

3. Or ask Liquify in one sentence

Liquify is an AI theme editor for Shopify. Type the change in plain words and it edits your theme for you, on a draft copy, with a live preview. Nothing changes on your store until you publish.

Questions

Where do Shopify newsletter signups go?

Into Customers in your Shopify admin, marked as subscribed to email marketing. Shopify Email and most email apps can use that list.

Is a pop-up better than a signup section?

Pop-ups usually collect more emails but can annoy visitors. A well-placed section plus a gentle, delayed pop-up is a common balance.
