How to add a WhatsApp chat button to Shopify

In many countries shoppers would rather send a WhatsApp message than an email. A floating WhatsApp button lets them start a chat with your business number in one tap.

1. Get your WhatsApp link

  1. Use your business phone number in international format, digits only, for example 15551234567.
  2. Your chat link is https://wa.me/ followed by that number. You can add ?text= with a pre-filled message.
  3. Test the link on your phone before adding it to the store.

2. Add the floating button

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes. On your theme, click the ... menu and choose Duplicate, so you have a backup. Then on the theme you're editing, open the ... menu and choose Edit code.
  2. Open layout/theme.liquid and add a fixed-position link to your wa.me URL just before the closing body tag.
  3. Style it as a round button in a bottom corner and make sure it doesn't cover the Add to cart button or a back to top button.

  .whatsapp-button { position: fixed; right: 1rem; bottom: 1rem; padding: 0.75rem 1rem; border-radius: 999px; background: #25d366; color: #fff; text-decoration: none; z-index: 10; }
</style>

3. Or ask Liquify in one sentence

Liquify is an AI theme editor for Shopify. Type the change in plain words and it edits your theme for you, on a draft copy, with a live preview. Nothing changes on your store until you publish.

Questions

Do I need WhatsApp Business for this?

The link works with any WhatsApp number, but the WhatsApp Business app adds a business profile, quick replies, and away messages.

Can the message mention the product the shopper is viewing?

Yes. On product pages, the link's text parameter can include the product title, so you know what they're asking about.
